Great Macro lens for moving subjects

Great Macro lens for moving subjects
I went back and forth with this lens or the Canon 100mm F/2.8 because it had IS. However, most of any macro shooting really needs to be on a tripod with a shutter release so not having IS was not important. One thing in macro photography needing to use a tripod is when focus stacking is being done. Since you need to shoot multiple exposures at different focus the tripod is a needed item. So, having image stabilization is not that important with macro photography. The big advantage of this lens is not to scare the subject away because you do not have to get so close, 18 inches for this lens compared to the 12 for the 100mm. I have used this lens without a tripod and setting the f-stop around F11 with a fast-enough shutter speed is pretty easy to do and using a flash makes it easier. The newer cameras also have much better performance at higher ISO, and I have had good results with my 7D mark ii ISO at 6400 and using the noise reduction in the software. With higher ISO faster shutter speeds are possible. This lens is super sharp which is expected for the cost of it. It makes a good telephoto lens, but you need to remember there is no IS and slower shutter speeds will need a tripod, I only use it as a macro lens. I have had the Canon 100 F/2.8 and it is a fantastic lens so if cost is a factor and you do not like using a tripod, that is the lens to get. The main advantage to this lens is getting close to your subject without them leaving. I would really recommend either really but I would pick this lens over the 100mm because I like to photograph hard moving targets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great macro lens for floral photos
Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2021
Bought this lens for my R6. I like to take floral photo and use to have Canon 100 F/2.8 (non-L) macro lens. This 180 macro gives very good color and contrast. I really like this picture rendering which makes flower subjects pop up and be isolated from background.
The R6 IBIS does help to reduce image blur, in my hands it can contribute 2.5-3.5 stops image stabilization. Enough for me to take clear indoors photos.
Auto-focus is not bad if you choose the right range for subjects: macro (0.48 m -1.5 m), or other (1.5 m - infinity). I tried to take portrait using range on 1.5m-infinity and it is pretty fast and accurate in R6 eye-focusing.
Compared to 100mm non-L macro, both lens are very sharp. I can’t see the photo sharpness difference from each other. The main difference is color saturation and background blur: the 180mm gives much more vivid color and good contrast, while 100mm has a bit plain color. The flowers look much more beautiful in 180mm photos.
The other difference is the isolation from background: 180mm can easily separate subjects from background and the background blur looks creamy and smooth. (That is from its longer focal length) .
In a summary, I really love this lens for floral photos. Color and contrast are really great!
