The first computer on the market sporting Intel’s new Xeon Nehalem processor is the sleek cool-looking Apple Mac Pro.
Chip processor architecture is not usually a subject consumers delve into when selecting a computer. So most won’t appreciate how the Nehalem design incorporates a innovate alternative to the traditional front-side bus link between the chip and the motherboard. The genius of the Nahelem designers was to place the memory controller and system I/O on the same unit as the CPU, allowing much faster movement of data between the chip and memory, and between the chip and the graphics card.
Further, the Nahelem’s memory controller has three separate channels for data throughput. This architecture also doesn’t limit the Mac Pro from using memory modules in pairs. Instead, the Nahelem has “hypter-threading” that essentially interlinks the computer’s four cores and makes them operate as if there were eight. Eight cores!
So what’s the upshot of all that?
The fastest Mac ever.
The new Mac Pro is two times faster than the previous (also very fast) Mac Pro and arguably the fastest computer of any sort in the $2,500 price range. If you run graphic-intensive programs, do a lot of Microsoft Windows work on your Mac, or are simply the inpatient type then this is your Mac. Compared to your current computer you’ll notice the speed difference instantly.
The basic Mac Pro configuration includes 3GB of memory, a massive 640GB hard disk, and a double-layer SuperDrive. And did we mention it looks great? The Mac Pro’s exterior is enough to make you forget about the innovative chip processor architecture inside.
