A few retailers are already shipping out the new Nikon D3x. We can hardly wait to get our hands on a testing model!
Along with an ultra high resolution LCD monitor, a 51-point auto focus system, dual CF card slots, an incredible 0.04 second shutter lag and what is almost certain to be outstanding photo quality, one of the remarkable features of the D3x is that it take photos of 24.5 megapixels. 24.5!
How large of a photo can you print with a 24.5mp camera? And how large a print can your current camera produce? Check out our graphic for the answers:
Said in words, a 24.5 megapixel image can produce a high quality print that’s as large as 20 inches (51 cm) x 13 inches (33 cm) if you print at 300 pixels per inch.
With that, here are the Spot Cool Stuff suggested cameras for various megapixels:
Megapixels1 | Point-And-Shoot | SLR | 6 | Fujifilm Finepix S6000fd | Pentax K100 | 8 | Canon PowerShot SD850 IS or Konica Minolta Dimage A200 | Canon 30D | 10 | Panasonic DMC-LX3 or DMC-FX500 | Canon 40D or Olympus Evolt 420 | 12 | Nikon Coolpix P5100 | Nikon D3 or D300 | 15 | Canon Powershot SD990IS | Canon 50D or Pentax K20D | 21 | - | EOS-1Ds Mark III | 24 | - | Sony Alpha DSLR-A900 2 | 160 | - | Seitz 6×17 digital 3 |

2 The Nikon D3x may well take over the role of our favorite 24mp camera.
3 We hope to review this camera in a separate post in the future. In the meantime, if you’d be so kind, please buy us one of these!

I shoot most of my photos at 2mp resolution on my Pentax WPi, which has a max of 6mp. I can easily print grainless A4 size photos (8 1/2 x 11) at this resolution! It’s a bunch of baloney that you need an $8,000 dollar camera to get a good 16×20 print! With my Nikon D40, ($500 with lens) (also 6mp max res), I can get grainless 16×20 prints shot in unmanipulated jpeg. The chart is totally theoretical and does not apply to real practice.

Unmanipulated JPEG? You can’t be taken seriously when you post a contradictory statement like this.. JPEGs are the manipulated data after the camera is done with it’s internal post processing.
RAW images are unmanipulated and yes, a 6.xMP can squeeze out a good image on an 8.5×11″ sheet, but to say it can print a 16×20 is pushing the top end of fabrication me thinks.

Zoe,
In a word: Expensive. The body of the Nikon D3x, sans lens, will set you back around US$8,000.
FYI, there’s a camera store called Adorama that will ship to Australia (and almost anywhere else):

I am just as excited by the Nikon D3x. But it will be a while before it reaches the shores of Australia where I live. What is the expected price of this camera?
